New relief for hospo gives donors online how-to videos for quarantine living

New emergency financial relief ‘by hospo, for hospo’ featuring celebrity chefs Matt Moran, Luke Mangan and Neil Perry for those affected by COVID-19 is launching in the form of a new donation website and interactive video library.

Established by Momento Hospitality, the not-for-profit initiative will support many of the hospitality staff not currently eligible for the Job Keeper scheme and allows venues to sign up, post ‘how-to videos’ and receive financial support, with Neil Perry’s Rockpool Dining Group along with Matt Moran, Luke Mangan and other hospitality groups already on board.

This ‘by industry for industry’ donation program, provides much needed money in the pockets of hospitality workers who have lost their jobs. In return for generous donations, Australians get access to cooking and cocktail making videos to upskill at home during self-isolation.

With Australians forced to stay at home, HelpOutHospo provides an opportunity for Australians to keep busy at home and gain skills with interactive online video classes for a small donation that goes straight to the pockets of chefs, bartenders and restaurant owners.

Distinguished chef and restaurateur, Matt Moran, who co-owns and operates harbourside icons Aria, Chiswick, Barangaroo House just to name a few, said that this is a way that the hospitality industry can look after its own during these difficult times.

“As an industry, we have a responsibility to care for own during this tough time. Initiatives like HelpOutHospo give consumers the chance to give back, learn something new and support their favourite chef or bartender during one of the most challenging periods in Australia’s dining history.”

The concept was inspired by one of the Momento group chefs, who offered his last remaining shifts to his colleagues out of generosity. In return, his colleagues offered to film him cook his signature dishes and sell them to the community to help raise money for him.

Jason Jelicich, CX director for Momento who heads-up this initiative says, “Working from home isn’t an option for the hospitality industry and so incomes have just dried up. Social distancing and self-isolation mean that Aussies can be creative on dining out at home while supporting their favourite restaurants. HelpOutHospo empowers Aussies to improve their home experiences during this time of solitude while paying forward to hospitality industry.”

Starting from a $10 donation per online video course, home cooks can ‘up their chef game’ during quarantine such as a crash course on mastering a roast porchetta, with all the steps including trussing, seasoning and how to nail the crispiest crackling.

Accommodating all skill levels, novice cooks can learn how to make a ‘nonna approved’ chicken scallopini coated in a creamy lemon and thyme sauce. Couples also won’t have to compromise on ‘date night out’ and can re-create their weekly date night rituals at home by cooking romantic dishes for two such as a fail-proof ‘indulgent mushroom risotto’ or a healthy ‘crispy pan seared Atlantic salmon with beans, haloumi, beetroot and a fresh citrus dressing’.

With bars locked down, mixologists can also share their most popular concoctions along with a step-by-step guide so their beloved locals can enjoy a slice of nightlife at home. Aussies can come out of quarantine with top notch skills such as shaking the perfect ‘old fashioned’, ‘dry martini’ or ‘Caprioska’.
